Insights in Evolutionary, Population, and Conservation Genetics Vol I
The fields of evolutionary, population, and conservation genetics are advancing rapidly, propelled by progress in high-throughput sequencing, spatial and temporal genomics, and increasingly powerful statistical and computational approaches. These developments are reshaping how we infer gene flow and connectivity, reconstruct demographic history, quantify effective population size, detect selection and local adaptation, and monitor changes in genetic diversity across landscapes and through time. At the same time, biodiversity is under growing pressure from habitat fragmentation, land-use change, climate change, invasive species, and emerging diseases, making rigorous population and evolutionary genetic inference central to effective conservation and sustainable management.Frontiers has organized an Insights series of Research Topics to highlight notable recent advances across its section, bringing together contributions from Editorial Board members and the broader research community. This Research Topic, Insights in Evolutionary, Population, and Conservation Genetics, aims to synthesize key conceptual, methodological, and applied breakthroughs from the past decade, identify persistent challenges, and outline future directions for the field. Led by Dr. Samuel Cushman, the Topic will showcase research that connects population and landscape genetic processes to ecological mechanisms and to actionable conservation outcomes, supporting SDG 15: Life on Land and related sustainability goals. We welcome contributions that provide robust, integrative insight into how gene flow, drift, selection, demography, and temporally dynamic environments shape genetic variation in natural and managed populations. Submissions should go beyond description to deliver clear population or evolutionary genetic inference, ideally with direct implications for conservation planning, restoration, or sustainable management.Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):• Population structure, gene flow, and functional connectivity in dynamic landscapes • Demographic history, effective population size, genetic monitoring, and genomic erosion through time • Selection, local adaptation, and genotype-by-environment interactions under environmental change • Conservation applications including connectivity planning, threat assessment, genetic rescue, and translocations • Methodological, statistical, and software advances that improve inference, reproducibility, and translation to managementThis Research Topic will provide a timely overview of where the field stands, what it has achieved, and what must come next to better predict and manage biodiversity responses in a rapidly changing world.
