Insights in Integrative Systems Ecology, Evolution and Plant Science
Systems-level thinking has transformed how we study life across scales, from molecules and cells to populations, communities and whole ecosystems. The Integrative Systems Ecology, Evolution and Plant Science section sits at the meeting point of systems biology, ecology, plant science, environmental science, evolution and synthetic biology, with a particular focus on how organisms and ecosystems respond to climate change, global change and biodiversity loss. This collection celebrates that progress: it brings together leading voices to highlight state-of-the-art developments and to set the agenda for the questions that will define the field next. This Research Topic aims to provide an overview of the most recent advances in integrative systems ecology, evolution and plant science. It seeks to show how connecting molecular and physiological processes to individual, population, community and ecosystem dynamics can solve complex biological problems and inform real-world challenges in conservation, agriculture, forestry and ecosystem management. Without losing sight of past achievements, the goal is to explore the potential of future work, addressing the methodological, theoretical and data challenges that remain at the forefront of this multidisciplinary area. The scope is broadly defined yet focused on areas where significant innovative strides have been made. We welcome contributions that emphasize:- Climate change and global change biology from a systems perspective- Predictive systems ecology and eco-evolutionary dynamics under environmental change- Plant systems biology of abiotic and biotic stress responses, and systems approaches to crop and forest resilience- Ecological networks, community assembly and biodiversity within a systems framework- Environmental and conservation systems biology for management and restoration- Environmental omics and microbiomes in natural and managed ecosystems- Synthetic and engineered biological systems for environmental and agricultural applications- Multi-scale models that link molecular, organismal and ecosystem processes- Machine learning, data integration and open tools for ecological and environmental systems. This collection welcomes contributions from Editorial Board Members of the section, or authors referred by a board member, reflecting on current developments and plotting pathways for upcoming research. Authors are encouraged to engage critically with their fields, identify the current challenges and propose novel solutions that advance our understanding of complex biological systems in the context of environmental change.
