Insights in Integrative Systems Neuroscience

Brain function emerges from coordinated interactions across molecular, cellular, synaptic, circuit, and whole-brain scales. Integrative systems neuroscience brings together neurobiology, computational neuroscience, cognitive science, and neurotechnology to investigate how neural systems process information, generate behavior, and adapt to internal and external change. Despite major advances in recording technologies, neuroimaging, computational modeling, and circuit manipulation, important questions remain about how activity across scales is integrated, how neural representations are transformed into behavior, and how these processes are altered in disease. Recent studies have combined cellular physiology with circuit-level recordings, functional connectomics, large-scale imaging, and computational approaches to reveal principles of sensory, motor, and cognitive processing. Progress in neuromodulation, synaptic plasticity, neuro-immune research, and brain–computer interfaces has further demonstrated the value of linking mechanisms across levels of organization. However, challenges remain in integrating heterogeneous datasets, establishing causal relationships between neural dynamics and behavior, improving model interpretability, and translating discoveries across species and clinical contexts. A coordinated investigation of these issues is needed to advance a comprehensive understanding of brain function and its disruption. This Insights in collection aims to provide an up-to-date perspective on advances in integrative systems neuroscience and to identify emerging questions that will shape the field. It will examine how cellular and synaptic mechanisms contribute to circuit and brain-wide dynamics, how these dynamics support behavior and adaptation, and how multidisciplinary approaches can address complex biological and clinical problems. Contributions may also clarify the physiological, computational, analytical, and translational challenges involved in applying systems-level knowledge to neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, cognitive rehabilitation, neurotechnology, and brain-computer interfaces. To gather further insights into the integration of neural mechanisms across molecular, cellular, circuit, behavioral, and brain-wide scales, this Insights in collection welcomes contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Multi-scale modeling of neural circuits and brain-wide networks• Neuromodulation and synaptic plasticity from a systems perspective• Systems-level analysis of sensory, motor, and cognitive processing• Neuro-immune interactions and their roles in brain health and disease• Functional connectomics and the integration of neuroimaging datasets• Computational models of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders• Neural mechanisms of learning, adaptation, and behavioral flexibility• Causal approaches for linking neural activity to behavior• Novel neurotechnologies for recording, manipulating, and interpreting brain activity• Open-source tools, analytical frameworks, and reproducible methods for circuit analysisThis collection welcomes contributions reflecting on current developments and plotting pathways for upcoming research, from Editorial Board Members of the section, from authors they refer, and, on invitation, from a number of external researchers whose work is shaping the direction of the field. Authors are encouraged to engage critically with their fields, identify the current challenges, and propose novel solutions that advance our understanding of complex biological systems.
