Integrated and Holistic Pediatric Rehabilitation across Development and Participation
Pediatric rehabilitation is a multidimensional field concerned with supporting children’s development, functioning, autonomy, participation, and quality of life. Motor, sensory, cognitive, communicative, emotional, relational, and adaptive abilities develop in constant interaction with one another and with the child’s family, school, and wider environment. Nevertheless, rehabilitation services and research often remain organized around isolated impairments, individual professional disciplines, or specific care settings. Variation in assessment methods, treatment planning, intervention intensity, family participation, and continuity of care continues to limit the development of consistent and transferable rehabilitation models. Current evidence increasingly supports individualized, family-centered, participation-oriented, and interdisciplinary approaches, but important questions remain regarding how these components should be integrated, evaluated, and adapted across developmental stages and clinical conditions. A broader investigation is needed to clarify how holistic rehabilitation can address the complexity of childhood development and disability. This Research Topic aims to advance knowledge of integrated and holistic pediatric rehabilitation interventions that consider the child as a whole. It will examine how multidimensional assessment can inform meaningful goal setting, how therapeutic components can be combined within individualized programs, and how interventions can be adapted to different developmental stages, diagnoses, and life contexts. Contributions may investigate interdisciplinary models, family-mediated care, continuity across hospital, outpatient, home, school, and community settings, and strategies that promote meaningful activities, participation, and autonomy. The Research Topic also seeks to identify effective methods for evaluating complex rehabilitation pathways and to promote international exchange on approaches that move beyond single-function treatment models. To gather further insights into comprehensive pediatric rehabilitation across clinical, developmental, family, and community contexts, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Multidimensional assessment of motor, sensory, cognitive, communicative, emotional, relational, and adaptive functions- Individualized rehabilitation planning, goal setting, and outcome measurement- Early intervention and rehabilitation across developmental stages- Integrated neuropsychomotor therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and speech and language therapy- Combined motor, sensory, cognitive, communicative, emotional, and relational interventions- Interdisciplinary and collaborative models of pediatric rehabilitation- Family-centered and family-mediated rehabilitation programs- Continuity and coordination of care across hospital, outpatient, home, school, and community settings- Participation-focused interventions supporting autonomy and everyday functioning- Digital health, robotics, virtual reality, assistive devices, and telerehabilitation within broader rehabilitation pathways- Implementation research, consensus development, and international comparison of rehabilitation models- Original studies, reviews, methodological papers, case series, consensus papers, and implementation research Topic editors: Giorgia Coratti, Giulia Purpura, Sudha Madhav Srinivasan Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/83942/integrated-and-holistic-pediatric-rehabilitation-across-development-and-participation
