Integrated Technology of Green Concrete Support and Dust Control in Underground Spaces Based on Solid Waste Resource Utilization

Underground engineering faces persistent challenges associated with high concrete consumption, considerable carbon emissions from traditional support systems, excessive dust generation during construction, and the urgent need for sustainable solid waste management. Conventional concrete support depends heavily on cement, resulting in environmental, operational and health burdens, while current construction methods often lead to hazardous airborne dust and underutilization of industrial solid wastes. Although recent advances in materials science and process integration have facilitated progress in waste valorization, emission reduction and intelligent control, comprehensive and integrated approaches that address these factors simultaneously remain limited in underground construction. This Research Topic aims to advance innovative technologies that holistically integrate green concrete development and dust control strategies for sustainable underground engineering. It invites contributions focused on using industrial solid wastes such as slag, fly ash and construction residues to partially replace cement in concrete support systems, thereby enhancing mechanical performance, durability and energy efficiency while reducing emissions and waste. Particular interest is given to the design and implementation of advanced dust management systems combining high-pressure micro-mist, foam-based suppression and negative-pressure dust collection, supported by real-time sensing and automated spray control for adaptive suppression. In addition, the Topic welcomes studies on closed-loop frameworks for solid waste utilization, including pretreatment, performance regulation, product development and engineering application, as well as insights into the transformation of bulk waste into high-value materials for underground infrastructure. This Research Topic welcomes original research, experimental studies, methodological papers, case reports and reviews that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:• Green concrete formulations leveraging solid waste for underground support• Optimization of structural systems for enhanced load-bearing performance and deformation control• Advanced, multi-modal dust capture and real-time environmental monitoring in subterranean spaces• Intelligent control and automation in dust suppression technologies• Full-chain strategies for transforming construction, demolition and industrial waste into reusable products• Biochar as a supplementary construction material: characterization, performance and application in underground engineering• Circular economy approaches and life-cycle assessment in underground engineeringBy integrating research across materials science, environmental engineering and construction process control — and embracing emerging materials such as biochar — this collection seeks to promote innovative, sustainable and scalable solutions for safer and more environmentally responsible underground construction.Article types: This Research Topic welcomes Original Research, Review, Mini Review, Perspective, Data Report, Method, Case Report and Brief Research Report articles.
