Integrated Water Management for Climate-Resilient Agriculture: Models, Remote Sensing, and Decision Support Systems
Climate change is intensifying water scarcity and hydrological variability, challenging the sustainability of agricultural systems and water resource management worldwide. Efficient use of irrigation water and integrated planning across different spatial scales -river basin, reservoir, and agricultural plot - are now essential. However, traditional, fragmented approaches to water management are insufficient to address these complex and interconnected challenges. Recent advances in mathematical modeling, Earth observation, and digital decision-support tools provide new opportunities to enhance data-driven planning, forecasting, and resource optimization. This Research Topic aims to bring together cutting-edge research that advances integrated water management practices for agriculture under climate stress, through the use of innovative technologies and interdisciplinary approaches. We welcome contributions that explore the development and application of tools and methodologies for sustainable and efficient water use in agriculture, focusing on multi-scale integration—from the watershed to the field—and their role in building climate-resilient systems. We welcome studies including (but not limited to):· Hydrological, hydrogeological, or hydraulic modeling at watershed and reservoir levels· Climate change scenarios and their impact on water availability for agriculture· Optimization of irrigation practices using mathematical models or AI-based approaches· Application of remote sensing for monitoring crop water use, soil moisture, or evapotranspiration· Development and application of decision support systems (DSS) for irrigation and water allocation· Case studies demonstrating integrated management across multiple spatial scales· Studies assessing policy or governance frameworks that enable integrated water planning· Interdisciplinary approaches combining environmental science, engineering, and data science.
