Integrating Advanced Technologies and Artificial Intelligence in the Surgical and Clinical Management of Facial, Dentoskeletal and Nasal Deformities
Facial surgery — across its diverse aesthetic, functional, and reconstructive dimensions — is undergoing a profound transformation driven by an unprecedented technological acceleration. From rhinoplasty to orthognathic surgery, from facial feminization procedures to oncological facial reconstruction and advanced aesthetic interventions, every clinical domain is being reshaped by innovations that redefine diagnostic, therapeutic, and rehabilitative paradigms. The concept of “technology” in this context must be understood in its broadest sense. It represents an integrated ecosystem that includes the evolution of surgical instrumentation and advanced hardware, diagnostic imaging platforms, morpho-functional simulation devices, three-dimensional virtual planning systems, intraoperative navigation and augmented reality, CAD/CAM technologies and patient-specific implants, and — increasingly — Artificial Intelligence and large language model (LLM) applications deployed across both the operating theater and the outpatient clinical setting. In this landscape, technology is not merely a supplementary tool; it becomes an integral component of clinical and surgical decision-making, contributing to procedures that are safer, more predictable, and more personalized. This Research Topic is conceived as a multidisciplinary platform to gather original contributions exploring this full technological spectrum applied to facial surgery. Contributions may span the entire continuum of patient care — preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative — and are encouraged across all technological domains. We welcome studies addressing orthognathic surgery, functional and aesthetic rhinoplasty, reconstructive and oncological facial surgery, facial feminization and gender-affirming procedures, aesthetic facial surgery, and all related fields. The common denominator is that technology plays a central and characterizing role in the work presented. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Integrated digital workflows in facial surgery across all sub-specialties.- Digital surgical planning and three-dimensional simulation.- Three-dimensional nasal assessment, morpho-functional simulation, and digital planning in rhinoplasty.- Applications of Artificial Intelligence and LLM models in diagnosis, surgical planning, patient education, and postoperative management.- Evolution of surgical instrumentation: high-precision devices, navigation systems, and advanced intraoperative support.- CAD/CAM technologies, 3D printing, and patient-specific implants.- Augmented and mixed reality in the surgical environment.- Technologies applied to facial feminization and gender-affirming facial surgery.- Long-term outcomes and quality of life in patients treated with technologically advanced approaches.- Technological integration in multidisciplinary pathways: the role of surgeons, radiologists, and biomedical engineers. The goal is to foster a rigorous, evidence-based, and clinically oriented scientific discussion capable of defining innovative and predictable models for facial surgery in the coming decade. We invite researchers to contribute with original articles, systematic reviews, case reports, and clinical studies.
