Integrating AI with postoperative rehabilitation: Enhancing muscle recovery through advanced monitoring

Postoperative rehabilitation remains a cornerstone in the functional recovery post-musculoskeletal surgeries, such as anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and total knee arthroplasty. This field currently faces two pivotal challenges: the need for objective, real-time monitoring of rehabilitation progress and addressing persistent quadriceps muscle weakness leading to disability and joint instability. Despite advancements, gaps persist in effectively integrating digital and clinical solutions to address these issues. Recent studies emphasize the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine vision to transform rehabilitation practices, yet practical implementation in clinical settings is still emerging. This Research Topic aims to integrate machine vision technology with the rehabilitation process, prioritizing the role of quadriceps muscle function. By combining digital monitoring with thorough muscle strength evaluations, the research hopes to develop precise rehabilitation protocols that increase adherence and improve patient outcomes. We also aim to investigate the efficacy of AI in predicting and improving functional recovery through continuous monitoring and tailored intervention pathways. To gather further insights in the intersection of AI and muscle function in postoperative rehabilitation, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Machine vision/AI-based approaches for monitoring rehabilitation exercises and adherence.o Clinical studies on quadriceps strength recovery and its predictive role in functional outcomes.o Interventions targeting arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI) following knee surgeries.o Digital rehabilitation platforms and their role in tele-rehabilitation.o Multimodal evaluation combining wearable sensors, sEMG, or imaging with AI analysis.o Translational studies linking biomechanics, AI, and clinical practice.
