Integrating Magnetostratigraphy and Palaeointensity Records: Refining the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale and Geodynamo Evolution
Integrating magnetostratigraphy with palaeointensity records provides a powerful way to refine the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS) and better understand the thermal and dynamo evolution of Earth’s core. Recent studies highlight how combining polarity reversal “barcodes” with absolute palaeointensity data can constrain both the timing of geomagnetic reversals and the long-term strength of the field, offering insights into inner core nucleation and geodynamo stability.Magnetostratigraphy is a pivotal field in Earth sciences, offering robust methods for dating and correlating rocks using the record of geomagnetic polarity reversals. The development and continuous refinement of the GPTS has provided a global chronological framework, essential for interpreting the temporal and spatial evolution of sedimentary and volcanic sequences. Despite significant progress, challenges remain in achieving precise correlations across disparate regions, especially where sedimentary records are discontinuous or disturbed. Ongoing debates focus on the resolution of magnetostratigraphic data versus other stratigraphic methods and the integration of magnetic records with other geochronological tools.Paleointensity research lies at the intersection of geophysics and geochronology, aiming to quantify changes in the strength and direction of Earth’s magnetic field over geological timescales. This field has undergone transformative advances, chiefly through the development of robust laboratory protocols for absolute paleointensity determinations from volcanic rocks and the growth of relative paleointensity (RPI) studies based on sedimentary archives and archaeological materials. Despite significant progress, ongoing challenges include insufficient calibration among different paleomagnetic sources and unresolved uncertainties regarding the link between paleointensity fluctuations and geomagnetic field behavior. Recent debates center around the fidelity of various paleointensity proxies and their resolution in capturing fine-scale geomagnetic events. This Research Topic seeks innovative contributions and comprehensive reviews that advance the role of magnetostratigraphy as a geochronological tool and consolidate recent progress in palaeointensity analysis. By integrating polarity records with field strength data, we aim to refine the Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS) and deepen our understanding of geodynamo evolution. To gather further insights in magnetostratigraphy and its integration with palaeointensity records, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Explore new or underutilized stratigraphic sections and test GPTS applications in diverse geological contexts.• Address methodological challenges in correlation, calibration, and data integration.• Advance palaeointensity measurement techniques and expand global datasets across volcanic, sedimentary, and archaeological archives.• Investigate the implications of palaeointensity variations for geomagnetic field modeling, dynamo theory, and Earth system history.• Foster interdisciplinary connections, bridging laboratory, sedimentary, and archaeological records.Appendix: We welcome the following article types—original research, reviews, methods, data reports, and case studies.
