Integrative Approaches to Deciphering Plant Immune Responses and Disease Resistance Mechanisms
Plant immune responses are governed by highly dynamic, interconnected networks of proteins, post-translational modifications, protein–protein interactions, and structural changes that underlie responses to biotic stress and ultimately determine resistance or susceptibility to pathogens. Although advances in plant proteomics allow for increasingly comprehensive characterizations, identifying the exact molecular mechanisms driving immune regulation remains challenging. Concurrently, structural biology offers crucial insights into how immune-related proteins recognize signals, form complexes, and undergo regulatory shifts. A central goal is now to bridge large-scale proteomic dataset discoveries with concrete molecular and structural mechanisms across multiple levels of plant biology. This Research Topic aims to feature innovative studies that advance our understanding of plant immunity and disease resistance through integrative proteomic and structural approaches. We seek contributions that illuminate how shifts in protein abundance, modification, localization, interaction, and structure drive immune signaling. We particularly encourage manuscripts that translate proteome-wide patterns into mechanistic models of immune regulation. We welcome Original Research, Reviews, Perspectives, and Methods encompassing experimental and computational approaches. Key topics include, but are not limited to:• Quantitative and spatial proteomics• Phosphoproteomics and other post-translational modifications• Protein–protein interactions and multi-protein complexes• Structural biology of immune receptor signaling and pathogen recognition• Effector–host interactions and molecular drivers of susceptibility or resistanceWe welcome both mechanistic dissections of specific molecular processes and data-driven discoveries of novel regulatory networks. Integrative studies combining proteomics with transcriptomics, metabolomics, imaging, genetics, or bioinformatics are strongly encouraged. Studies applying fundamental discoveries toward crop disease resistance and agricultural improvements are especially welcome.
