Integrative Care and Well-being in Cancer

Oncology has rapidly evolved over the past decade, marked by breakthroughs in early cancer detection, the broad implementation of screening initiatives, and the continual refinement of therapeutic modalities. This dynamic progress has shifted the field from a narrow, disease-focused approach to a patient-centered, multidisciplinary continuum of care. Central to this transformation is the integration of nutritional support, psycho-oncological interventions, tailored physiotherapy, and sophisticated management of treatment-related side effects - all of which are now integral components of comprehensive oncology practice. Concurrently, the rise of immunotherapy, often combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, presents both new avenues and distinct complexities, highlighting the critical importance of adaptable and holistic care models. Despite notable advancements in patient survival and outcomes, unresolved questions remain regarding the optimal implementation of supportive interventions and the equitable delivery of integrative care across variable healthcare environments. This Research Topic aims to systematically explore and critically assess the real-world impact of comprehensive, person-centered approaches within oncology. The primary goal is to delineate the advantages and potential drawbacks of integrative care strategies, while examining how multidisciplinary frameworks affect quality of life and patient-reported outcomes throughout the care continuum. The research further seeks to identify persistent barriers to the adoption and consistent deployment of such strategies. Specific objectives include evaluating the efficacy of individual supportive measures, understanding the value of integrative care for patients with advanced or metastatic disease, and investigating how interventions can be tailored to individual patient characteristics and treatment trajectories. The scope of this Research Topic is confined to clinically relevant, evidence-based, and multidisciplinary approaches within integrative cancer care, intentionally excluding isolated advances in specific therapeutic techniques unless embedded within a broader supportive framework. This focus aims to generate actionable insights for the holistic management of cancer patients across all disease stages. To gather further insights in this subject area, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Nutritional interventions and dietary support in oncology.- Psycho-oncological care models and mental health outcomes.- Integration of physiotherapy and structured exercise programs.- Management of immunotherapy and multimodal treatment side effects.- Patient-centered care in advanced and metastatic disease.- Personalization of supportive care based on patient and disease characteristics.- Health systems and policy innovations to facilitate integrative cancer care. Please note that manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics or computational analysis of public genomic or transcriptomic databases not accompanied by validation (either in an independent cohort or in vitro/in vivo biological validation) are outside the scope of this Research Topic.
