Integrative Models of Human Disease: From Pathophysiological Mechanisms to Diagnostic Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets

Understanding the molecular basis of human diseases requires integrative approaches that combine advanced experimental models with the identification of clinically relevant biomarkers and therapeutic targets. In recent years, the development of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) cellular systems, including organoids, alongside animal models, has significantly improved our ability to recapitulate disease pathophysiology and uncover mechanistic insights. This Research Topic aims to bring together cutting-edge studies that explore the interplay among inflammation, telomere dynamics, and aging processes in the onset and progression of human diseases. Particular emphasis will be placed on identifying molecular and cellular pathways, as well as regulatory networks involving microRNAs (miRNAs), that may serve as diagnostic biomarkers or therapeutic targets.By integrating data from diverse experimental systems and methodological approaches, this Research Topic seeks to bridge the gap between basic molecular research and translational applications in diagnostics and therapeutics.Key themes and topics of interest are: • Development and application of 2D and 3D in vitro models (e.g., organoids, spheroids) for human disease modeling• Use of animal models to investigate disease mechanisms and validate therapeutic strategies• Role of inflammation in disease initiation and progression• Telomere biology and aging in chronic and degenerative diseases• Discovery and validation of diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets• Characterization of cellular and molecular signaling pathways involved in human diseases• Functional role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in disease regulation and their translational potential• Integration of multi-omics approaches for molecular diagnosticsCarla Viegas is co-founder of GenoGla Diagnostics.
