Integrative Multi-Omics Biomarkers for Early Detection and Monitoring of Stress-Induced Neurological Disorders
The field of neurodegenerative disease research has widely recognized that chronic psychological and physiological stress is a significant contributor to both the onset and progression of various neurodegenerative disorders. Central mechanisms such as neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative damage play pivotal roles in compromising neuronal health and accelerating pathology in disorders like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Despite increased understanding of stress-induced neurobiological processes, a persistent hurdle remains: the lack of sensitive, specific, and clinically actionable biomarkers that can be leveraged for early diagnosis and effective disease monitoring. Current research highlights promising biological candidates—including gene and epigenome modifications, non-coding RNAs, circulating hormones like cortisol, neurotrophic factors, and inflammatory mediators—but translating these findings into usable clinical tools is an ongoing challenge. This Research Topic aims to advance the identification and validation of accessible, reliable biomarkers that reflect the cumulative burden of chronic stress on the nervous system. By integrating multi-layered omics data—spanning genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics—with blood-based and circulating biomarkers, the aim is to unveil predictive molecular signatures that are tightly linked to stress-induced neuronal dysfunction and degeneration. It will also address fundamental questions about the dynamic molecular networks connecting chronic stress to increased neuronal vulnerability and examine robust strategies for the validation of biomarker panels in diverse patient populations. This Research Topic welcomes studies focused on mechanisms, biomarker discovery, and translational insights that bridge basic and clinical neuroscience in the context of stress-related neurodegeneration. The scope encompasses, but is not limited to, the following themes:- Identification and validation of novel biomarkers for stress-mediated neurodegenerative changes.- Multi-omics integration and computational modeling for predictive biomarker signature discovery.- Mechanistic studies on how chronic stress modulates molecular pathways implicated in neurodegeneration.- Development of minimally invasive and blood-based biomarker platforms.- Strategies for clinical translation and validation of biomarker panels across heterogeneous populations.- Interplay between genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors in stress-related neuronal vulnerability.- Implications for personalized medicine and therapeutic monitoring in neurodegenerative disorders.
