Intelligent Agriculture: Sensors, IoT, and Analytics

Agriculture has undergone multiple technological revolutions, from mechanization to biotechnology. Today, the sector is undergoing a digital transformation driven by advances in sensing technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), and data science. Unlike traditional agricultural practices that rely on periodic observations and manual interventions, the emergence of low-cost sensors, high-speed wireless communication, and cloud computing platforms has enabled continuous, real-time monitoring of soil, environment, and crop conditions. In addition, the integration with geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing platforms allows precise spatial and temporal analysis of agricultural landscapes. However, further research is needed to improve system integration, scalability, and practical implementation in diverse agricultural contexts. Addressing these challenges requires multidisciplinary research that integrates agriculture, engineering, computer science, and environmental sciences to maximize crop production, improve farm profitability, and reduce environmental impacts, thereby advancing sustainability. The goal of this Research Topic is to address key technical and practical challenges in intelligent agriculture. Although sensor technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), and machine learning techniques have improved rapidly, many applications still work in isolation. Systems often lack integration, standardization, and field validation. There is a strong need to integrate data on soil, weather, and crops into reliable decision-support systems. Recent advances in data processing, remote sensing, and artificial intelligence offer new opportunities for real-time, accurate agricultural management. We invite studies that present scalable systems, data integration methods, and tested applications. Submissions should show how digital technologies can improve water and nutrient use efficiency, yield stability, and environmental sustainability in modern agricultural systems. This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, review papers, technical notes, perspective papers, guidance papers, and method papers that advance the theory and practice of intelligent agriculture. The scope includes, but is not limited to: 1) Soil, crop, and weather sensor development and calibration 2) IoT-based decision support for sustainable cropping systems 3) Integrated sensor, IoT, and analytics platforms for climate-smart agroecosystems 4) Remote and proximal sensing for precision crop management 5) Artificial intelligence (AI) models for climate resilience in cropping systems Topic editors: Musfiq Salehin, Nowsheen Nazir, Kosana Suvocarev Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78477/intelligent-agriculture-sensors-iot-and-analytics
