Intelligent Battery Management and Fast Charging for Safe, High-Performance Lithium-Ion Systems

Lithium-ion batteries are central to electric vehicles, portable electronics, and stationary energy storage. As demand grows for faster charging, longer service life, higher performance, and improved safety, battery management systems are becoming increasingly important for reliable and efficient battery operation. However, major challenges remain, including capacity fade, lithium plating during fast charging, thermal instability, cell-to-cell inconsistency, and limited observability of internal states under dynamic operating conditions. These issues become even more critical at the module and pack levels, where accurate estimation, early fault detection, and coordinated control are essential to ensure both safety and performance. At the same time, the field is advancing rapidly. Recent progress in advanced sensing, hybrid modeling, digital twins, cloud-edge architecture, and artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities for real-time diagnostics, adaptive control, predictive safety management, and charging optimization. Fast charging and extreme fast charging are emerging as highly active areas of research, driving strong interest in integrated solutions that address electrochemical, thermal, and control constraints together. This Research Topic aims to bring together high-quality contributions on monitoring, diagnostics, management, and charging strategies for lithium-ion battery systems at the cell, module, and pack levels. We particularly welcome studies that improve safety, charging performance, state estimation, fault diagnosis, thermal control, and lifecycle-aware operation, especially when supported by experimental validation or practical relevance. Topics include, but are not limited to:- State estimation, diagnostics, prognostics, and fault detection- Physics-based, hybrid, and physics-informed battery modeling- Digital twins and cloud-edge battery management architecture- Advanced sensing and sensor fusion- Fast charging and extreme fast charging- Thermal management and thermal runaway mitigation- Pack-level management and cell balancing- Artificial intelligence and machine learning for battery systems Topic editors: Ki-Yong Oh, Janghyuk Moon Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/79757/intelligent-battery-management-and-fast-charging-for-safe-high-performance-lithium-ion-systems
