Intelligent Nanostructured Systems: From Biosensing and Bioelectronics to Precision Therapeutics

Nanostructured materials and engineered biointerfaces are transforming biomedical engineering by enabling ultra-sensitive biosensing, self-powered bioelectronics, and intelligent therapeutic delivery. Leveraging nanoscale phenomena allows unprecedented control over biological interactions down to the molecular level, bridging materials science, engineering, and biomedicine. This Research Topic focuses on the design, synthesis, characterization, and biomedical translation of multifunctional nanostructured systems capable of sensing biological signals, harvesting biomechanical energy, responding to endogenous or external stimuli, and mediating precise therapeutic interventions. We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review, Perspective, and Method articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Functional Nanostructured Interfaces & Smart Biomaterials: Nanoparticles, nanofibers, nanocomposites, hydrogels, and two-dimensional (2D) functional materials.- Nanobiosensing Platforms: Electrochemical, optical, piezoelectric, and multimodal biosensors; wearable, flexible, implantable, and point-of-care (POC) devices for continuous biomarker monitoring.- Self-Powered Bioelectronics & Energy Harvesting: Triboelectric and piezoelectric nanogenerators (TENGs and PENGs); battery-free bioelectronics; electrically active nanomaterials for cellular and tissue modulation.- Intelligent & Targeted Drug Delivery: Biomimetic and cell-membrane-camouflaged nanocarriers; systems responsive to internal stimuli (pH, redox, enzymes, ROS) or external triggers (light, ultrasound, magnetic/electrical fields).- Theranostic & Regenerative Applications: Integrated sensing-therapeutic platforms; targeted nanomedicine for oncology, wound healing, and tissue regeneration.- Advanced Evaluation & Translational Models: Nano–bio interface characterization; physiologically relevant 3D cell cultures, spheroids, organoids, and organ-on-a-chip models for efficacy, biocompatibility, and safety assessment.- Integrated Computational & Nanoscale Models: In silico approaches directly coupled with experimental nanomaterial design, device optimization, or delivery kinetics.Note for prospective authors: Submissions must emphasize nanomaterial design, synthesis, physicochemical characterization, or particle-dependent biological effects. Purely clinical studies, stand-alone machine learning without nanoscale experimental integration, and non-nanoscale central nervous system brain stimulation fall outside the scope of this collection.
