Inter-organ Crosstalk in Pediatric Metabolic Diseases

The study of pediatric metabolic diseases often highlights the complexity of biochemical pathways and physiological processes disrupted in young patients. Within these diseases, inter-organ crosstalk plays a crucial role in maintaining or disrupting metabolic balance. Despite advances in understanding individual metabolic diseases, there remains a vast uncharted territory regarding cross-organ communication and its implications for disease progression and management. Current literature outlines several critical interactions, such as those between the liver, pancreas, and adipose tissue, which are pivotal in conditions like type 2 diabetes and obesity. However, a coherent framework illustrating the broader spectrum of organ interactions is still lacking. This Research Topic aims to forge a deeper understanding of inter-organ communication pathways and their relevance to pediatric metabolic diseases. The goal is to unravel specific mechanisms and pathways that orchestrate metabolic harmony or discord among organs in young populations. Questions such as, "How do liver-pancreas communications affect glucose metabolism beyond known pathways?" or "What are the emerging roles of the gut microbiota in systemic organ interactions in children?" are central. By addressing these inquiries, the Research Topic seeks to uncover potential therapeutic targets and interventions. To gather further insights into the intricate domain of inter-organ crosstalk in pediatric metabolic conditions, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• The role of hormonal signaling in organ communication• Influence of genetic and environmental factors on inter-organ pathways• Innovations in diagnostic techniques to assess organ crosstalk• Impact of diet and lifestyle interventions on organ interactions• Case studies on rare pediatric metabolic disorders with inter-organ componentsWe also invite review articles, original research, and case reports to contribute to this expanding field.
