Interactions between Advanced Low-Carbon Materials and Sustainable Construction Management
The construction industry is historically resource-intensive and is responsible for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions. As the world accelerates towards net-zero carbon targets, transitioning to sustainable construction practices is no longer an option but a critical necessity. The development of advanced low-carbon materials and the extensive utilization of solid waste for high-performance construction materials have emerged as vital strategies to mitigate adverse environmental impacts. However, the successful integration of these innovative materials into real-world projects extends beyond laboratory research, and it heavily depends on robust construction management for sustainability. To maximize their environmental and economic benefits, there must be a seamless synergy between material science and project management, encompassing supply chain logistics, on-site constructability, and comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA).Despite rapid advancement in material science, a significant gap remains between the laboratory development of advanced materials and their widespread implementation in large-scale construction projects. The primary problem this Research Topic seeks to address is how to effectively manage the integration of utilizing advanced, low-carbon materials within the practical and economic constraints of construction management. This Research Topic aims to bridge the critical gap between material innovation and engineering practice. For built environment projects, we seek to explore how advanced low-carbon materials and solid waste utilization can drive new paradigms in sustainable construction management. Recent advances in industrial byproduct utilization, recycled aggregates, and low-carbon binders offer immense potential for carbon footprint reduction. To fully realize this potential, we need to investigate innovative management strategies, including optimized constructability evaluations, life cycle methodologies, and refined quality control. Ultimately, the goal is to provide a comprehensive platform to share insights on overcoming the managerial and technical barriers to sustainable construction, paving the way for greener buildings and infrastructure. This Research Topic welcomes interdisciplinary research at the intersection of civil engineering materials and construction management. We invite researchers and industry professionals to submit Original Research, Reviews, Mini-Reviews, and Case Studies.Specific themes of interest include, but are not limited to:1. Application and constructability evaluation of high-performance construction materials and low-carbon materials in construction projects.2. Project management and supply chain strategies for integrating solid waste utilization into the built environment.3. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) of advanced green construction materials.4. Evaluation of carbon footprint reduction and sustainability metrics in construction processes.5.
