Iron Metabolism and Cardiometabolic Dysfunction in Type 2 Diabetes
Iron plays an important role in metabolic regulation, influencing pathways involved in glucose homeostasis, insulin sensitivity, and the development of type 2 diabetes. Alterations in iron balance have been linked not only to diabetes risk but also to the broader spectrum of cardiometabolic dysfunction, including vascular complications and metabolic comorbidities. These relationships are not uniform and appear to vary across physiological states, population groups, and environmental exposures.A deeper understanding of how iron metabolism contributes to the heterogeneity of type 2 diabetes is needed to clarify its role in disease onset, progression, and complications. In particular, there is growing interest in how iron interacts with other metabolic and hormonal factors, and how these interactions may differ across individuals and clinical contexts. This Research Topic aims to bring together studies that investigate iron metabolism in type 2 diabetes while expanding the focus to include its role in cardiometabolic health, disease variability, and modifying factors such as sex, ageing, and lifestyle. Contributions that connect mechanistic insights with clinical and population-based observations are particularly encouraged.Themes of interest include, but are not limited to:• Mechanistic links between iron balance and glucose regulation, insulin resistance, and beta cell function• Iron-related mechanisms contributing to vascular dysfunction and cardiometabolic complications in type 2 diabetes • Sex-specific and life-course influences (e.g. ageing, menopause) on iron–glucose relationships• Influence of lifestyle and environmental factors on iron-related metabolic dysregulation in type 2 diabetes• Iron-related contributions to disease heterogeneity and progression in type 2 diabetes• Clinical, cohort, and population-based studies examining variability in iron-associated metabolic risk• Longitudinal or interventional studies exploring how changes in iron status influence metabolic and cardiometabolic outcomes• Iron-related inflammatory and oxidative processes contributing to diabetes complications Topic editors: Taulant Muka Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78612/iron-metabolism-and-cardiometabolic-dysfunction-in-type-2-diabetes
