Isokinetic Dynamometry in Neuromuscular Testing: Impacts on Athletic Performance, Injury Risk, and Public Health

Isokinetic dynamometry represents a foundational tool in sports science and clinical evaluation for objectively assessing muscle strength and neuromuscular function. Traditionally lauded for its reliability and reproducibility, isokinetic testing has been integral to athlete monitoring, injury assessment, and rehabilitation interventions. However, while advances in measurement technologies and protocols have greatly improved our ability to generate and interpret isokinetic data, key questions remain regarding its translation beyond injury monitoring into holistic athlete profiling, injury risk prediction, and wider public health applications. Recent studies underscore the nuanced role of isokinetic parameters as both outcome measures and predictive tools, yet variations in methodology and interpretation often limit comparability and practical impact. Debate continues over the standardization of testing protocols, the predictive relevance of unilateral and bilateral strength asymmetries, and the use of isokinetic outcomes as benchmarks for functional recovery or performance optimization. A critical gap exists in connecting isokinetic findings more directly with biomechanical, functional, and epidemiological data to inform evidence-based decision-making for both individuals and populations. This Research Topic aims to foster innovative approaches and fresh perspectives in the application of isokinetic dynamometry within neuromuscular testing. Specifically, it seeks to clarify how isokinetic variables can serve as predictors of athletic performance, stratifiers for injury risk, and indices for functional health on a population level. By inviting theoretical, experimental, and methodological contributions, the Research Topic aspires to bridge the divide between descriptive muscle strength evaluation and actionable insights for training, prevention, and policy. Interdisciplinary collaboration between sports scientists, clinicians, physiotherapists, and public health practitioners will be central to enhancing both scientific understanding and real-world applicability. To gather further insights into the potential and limitations of isokinetic neuromuscular testing, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Neuromuscular determinants of athletic performance using isokinetic outcomes• Strength asymmetries, imbalances, and their association with injury risk• Standardization of isokinetic testing protocols and data interpretation• Role of isokinetic testing in determining return-to-sport criteria• Applications of isokinetic measurements in public health and assessment of functional capacity• Integration of isokinetic data with biomechanical, functional, or epidemiological indicators• Innovative analytical and methodological approaches in isokinetic research Topic editors: Aleksandar Kukric, Marko Joksimovic, Filip Kukic, MUSAB ÇAĞIN Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78487/isokinetic-dynamometry-in-neuromuscular-testing-impacts-on-athletic-performance-injury-risk-and-public-health
