Kidney Injury and Repair: Metabolic Reprogramming, Mitochondria and Cell Fate

The field of renal pathophysiology has increasingly recognized the pivotal role of cellular metabolism and mitochondrial dynamics in orchestrating both injury responses and regenerative processes. Acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are associated with profound metabolic alterations, mitochondrial dysfunction, and activation of complex immunoinflammatory cascades. Metabolic and mitochondrial stress also regulates cell–cell interactions among renal tubular epithelial cells, endothelial cells, stromal cells, and resident or infiltrating immune cells. These interactions may influence immune activation, epithelial cell death, maladaptive repair, and fibrotic progression. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of the interplay between immunometabolism, mitochondrial biology, cellular fate, and renal cell–cell communication in the context of kidney injury and repair. Specifically, it seeks to elucidate how metabolic reprogramming and mitochondrial regulation influence renal cell survival, differentiation, and death, and how crosstalk between kidney parenchymal cells and immune cells determines inflammatory and reparative outcomes. By integrating mechanistic, translational, and clinical perspectives, this topic aspires to uncover novel pathways that can be therapeutically targeted to restore metabolic homeostasis and promote adaptive repair following kidney injury. To gather further insights into the metabolic–mitochondrial–immune axis in renal pathophysiology, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and quality control in models of acute kidney injury.o Metabolic reprogramming governing renal tubular cell survival, transdifferentiation, or death.o Metabolic and mitochondrial regulation of crosstalk between renal tubular epithelial cells, endothelial cells, stromal cells, and immune cells.o Molecular insights into programmed cell death pathways and their contribution to sterile inflammation and fibrosis.o Therapeutic interventions aimed at restoring metabolic balance and enhancing mitochondrial health in kidney repair.o Translational or clinical studies connecting immunometabolism signatures with disease progression and patient outcomes.
