Lasting Impact of Psychiatric Rehabilitation on System-wide Outcomes
This Research Topic focuses on the enduring impact of psychiatric rehabilitation on system-wide outcomes, not solely at the individual level or the level of individual organizations, but at a system-wide or societal level. There has been a critique that these interventions have only had impact in the settings where effectiveness studies were implemented, but not more broadly in everyday practice settings where these services are now provided. Beyond the settings of controlled studies, when psychiatric rehabilitation interventions are funded and implemented in specific jurisdictions, do these empirically supported best practices produce measurable system- wide outcomes such as lower unemployment, less homelessness, better community integration and improved quality life among persons with serious mental illness? This Research Topic seeks to move beyond programmatic-level studies to examine the system-wide impact of psychiatric rehabilitation on critical life domains for persons with serious mental illness. While the past three decades have witnessed widespread adoption of recovery principles and expansion of evidence-based practices programs internationally, it remains unclear as to whether these policy shifts have translated into meaningful, measurable improvements in the lives of those they aim to serve The goal is to include reviews of related evidence, interpretations of historical trends, current or recent research reports, and future directions for planned investigations. This Research Topic will focus on examining system level outcomes, rather than individual program evaluations, across five essential domains that reflect the core values of psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery: • Competitive employment rates and economic self-sufficiency• Access to and completion of educational opportunities • Stable housing and reduction of homelessness • Decreased use of coercive interventions (including involuntary hospitalization, seclusion, restraint, and forced medication)• The expansion of genuine choice and self-determination in both treatment and life decisions.
