Latine Political Realignment and the Quest for Policy Influence
The field of Latine political studies has reached a critical juncture in the aftermath of the 2024 U.S. election, revealing new contours in partisan alignment and representation. Traditional expectations of steadfast party loyalty among Latine voters have been unsettled by noticeable shifts, as evidenced by significant support for non-traditional candidates and a willingness to cross party lines. This evolving landscape has exposed crucial gaps in our understanding of how electoral incorporation translates into meaningful policy outcomes for marginalized communities. Recent studies highlight persistent economic stagnation and policy dissatisfaction among Latine constituencies, even as their electoral significance increases. Yet, despite becoming ever more central to national outcomes, Latine voters often remain sidelined in policy debates and struggle to convert their voting power into durable policy gains. Key questions now focus on the mechanisms of inclusion: What enables or hinders Latine political groups from moving beyond symbolic representation to exercise substantive policy power? And how do party strategies, messaging, and issue framing mediate these outcomes? This Research Topic aims to critically examine the dynamics of Latine political realignment, representation, and policy leverage in the contemporary United States. We seek to interrogate the intersections of voter behavior, party responsiveness, and organizational mobilization that shape Latine communities’ evolving political identities and capacities. By investigating both the opportunities and constraints facing Latine voters, this Research Topic hopes to illuminate conditions under which electoral relevance can be parlayed into lasting political influence. Our goal is to facilitate a richer scholarly dialogue that addresses the challenges, dilemmas, and strategic choices underpinning Latine engagement in a period of volatility and transformation within American democracy. We welcome theoretical and empirical contributions that focus on the United States but also encourage comparative and local perspectives that enhance our understanding of Latine political engagement and policy outcomes.
