Leading Through Transformation: How Artificial Intelligence Shapes Employee Mental Health

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the nature of work, influencing organizational structures, job roles, and interpersonal dynamics. As AI systems become increasingly embedded in decision-making, performance assessment, and communication processes, they not only enhance productivity but also reshape the psychosocial environment where employees operate. While these technologies can improve efficiency and support well-being initiatives, they also introduce new challenges, heightened stress, uncertainty about job security, and diminished autonomy ,all of which are key determinants of mental health. These changes extend beyond individual workplaces to affect population well-being and public mental health at large. Yet, the current evidence base remains fragmented, with limited understanding of how AI integration impacts psychological outcomes and what leadership strategies most effectively protect mental health in digitally evolving workplaces. This Research Topic aims to advance knowledge about the mental health implications of AI-driven organizational transformation and to identify leadership practices that foster resilience, inclusion, and well-being. By bridging insights from public mental health, organizational psychology, digital ethics, and health policy, it seeks to develop frameworks that guide organizations and policymakers toward health-promoting, ethically grounded AI adoption. The goal is to generate evidence that supports preventive strategies, mitigates psychosocial risks, and promotes equitable adaptation to technological change, thereby safeguarding population mental health during ongoing digital transformation. To gather further insights into these intersections, this Research Topic welcomes multidisciplinary contributions exploring how AI shapes the social determinants of mental health and workforce well-being. Potential themes include, but are not limited to:• Mental health and psychosocial risks associated with AI integration at work.• Transformational, ethical, and inclusive leadership in digitally evolving organizations.• Preventive strategies and frameworks for workplace mental health promotion.• Public mental health and policy perspectives on digital transformation.• Equity, cultural, and ethical considerations in AI-mediated work environments.• Responsible design and use of AI for monitoring and improving well-being.• Workforce resilience and adaptive capacity in response to digital change.
