Lifestyle and Physical Activity Interventions in Chronic Degenerative and Autoimmune Disease Prevention and Management

Autoimmune and chronic degenerative diseases represent an expanding global health challenge, affecting individuals across all age groups and significantly impacting quality of life. While pharmacological treatments remain the mainstay of care, emerging evidence highlights the essential role of lifestyle factors, particularly physical activity, in modulating immune function, inflammation, and disease outcomes. This Research Topic, “Lifestyle and Physical Activity Interventions in Chronic Degenerative and Autoimmune Disease Prevention and Management,” aims to compile multidisciplinary perspectives exploring how exercise and lifestyle modifications can contribute to the prevention, progression control, and symptom management of autoimmune and chronic degenerative disorders. We welcome contributions from basic, clinical, and applied sciences, including original research, reviews, and meta-analyses that address topics such as: • The physiological and molecular mechanisms linking physical activity to immune regulation, neurodegeneration, and inflammation • Clinical and behavioral outcomes of structured exercise programs in autoimmune and chronic degenerative populations • Lifestyle and dietary interventions supporting immune balance, metabolic health, and disease-modifying outcomes • Adherence, patient engagement, and the use of digital or community-based strategies in long-term management • Integrative approaches combining lifestyle modification with pharmacological or rehabilitative therapies By bridging immunology, physiology, neuroscience, public health, and behavioral science, this Research Topic seeks to advance evidence-based understanding of how lifestyle and physical activity interventions can inform preventive and therapeutic strategies for autoimmune and chronic degenerative diseases.
