Lifestyle Factors in Cardiometabolic and Mental Health: Physical Activity, Sport Participation, and Health-Related Indices
Lifestyle factors are increasingly recognized as important contributors to both cardiometabolic and mental health. Physical activity and sport participation have been associated with a range of favorable health outcomes, whereas sedentary behavior has been linked to elevated cardiometabolic risk and poorer mental health. In addition to behavioral factors, health-related indices (including anthropometric and metabolic markers) are commonly used to assess disease risk at both individual and population levels. Emerging evidence suggests that lifestyle behaviors and health-related indices are closely interconnected and may jointly influence cardiometabolic and mental health outcomes across different populations. Given the rising prevalence of cardiometabolic disorders and mental health conditions worldwide, there is a growing need to better understand how these factors interact. An integrated examination of lifestyle behaviors and health-related indices may help inform more effective public health approaches to disease prevention and health promotion. Despite growing recognition of the importance of lifestyle factors for cardiometabolic and mental health, important gaps remain in understanding how behavioral and health-related factors jointly contribute to disease risk and prevention. Much of the existing research has focused on single exposures, such as physical activity or sedentary behavior, without fully considering sport participation or the role of health-related indices used to assess cardiometabolic and mental health risk. As a result, evidence remains fragmented, limiting its translation into effective public health strategies. The goal of this Research Topic is to bring together multidisciplinary research that examines physical activity, sport participation, sedentary behavior, and health-related indices within a unified framework. By integrating findings from observational, experimental, and intervention studies, this Topic aims to clarify how these factors interact to influence cardiometabolic and mental health outcomes. In doing so, it seeks to support the development of more comprehensive and context-sensitive approaches to health promotion and disease prevention. This Research Topic focuses on lifestyle-related factors associated with cardiometabolic and mental health across diverse populations. Contributions are invited on themes including physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sport participation, as well as health-related indices such as anthropometric or metabolic markers relevant to disease risk assessment. Studies examining how these behavioral and biological factors interact, differ across population subgroups, or vary across the life course are particularly encouraged. Research addressing social, psychological, or physiological mechanisms underlying these associations is also within scope.
