Linking neutron-based characterization to performance in next-generation solid-state batteries
Solid-state batteries represent one of the most promising frontiers in next-generation energy storage, offering the potential for safer, higher-energy systems free from the limitations of liquid electrolytes. Yet the path from materials discovery to reliable device performance remains obstructed by persistent challenges: limited ionic conductivity, interfacial instability, mechanical degradation, and poorly understood failure mechanisms. Closing the gap between these phenomena and real-world electrochemical performance demands characterization tools that can see inside functioning devices — at the atomic and nanoscale level, under realistic operating conditions.Neutron scattering techniques are uniquely suited to this task. Their deep penetration, sensitivity to light elements such as lithium, and compatibility with in situ and operando measurement geometries allow researchers to probe the structural and dynamic processes that directly govern battery function. Neutron diffraction, quasi-elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, and neutron imaging can each yield information about ion transport pathways, phase evolution, and interfacial stability that is difficult or impossible to access by other means. Critically, these insights are not ends in themselves — they are most powerful when translated into quantitative links between atomic-scale observables and macroscopic electrochemical performance. This Research Topic invites contributions that make that translation explicit. We seek work that goes beyond characterization to interpret neutron-derived data in terms of what it means for battery performance, longevity, and design. By connecting neutron science to electrochemistry and materials engineering, the collection aims to accelerate progress toward solid-state batteries that are not only well-characterized but genuinely high-performing.Contributions may address, but are not limited to, the following themes:Correlation of neutron-derived structural and dynamical data with electrochemical performance metricsMechanistic insights into ionic transport, phase transitions, and interfacial evolution and their performance consequencesNeutron imaging and scattering studies of lithium redistribution, degradation, and failure under realistic cycling conditionsDevelopment of operando neutron cell designs that enable performance-relevant measurement conditionsMultimodal approaches integrating neutron techniques with X-ray, spectroscopy, or microscopy to build a complete performance pictureCase studies of emerging solid electrolytes and engineered interfaces, with emphasis on structure–performance relationshipsOpen datasets, workflows, and best-practice guides for neutron-based measurements in battery researchWe welcome Original Research, Methods, Mini Reviews, Perspectives, and Data Reports.
