Lipid-Based Nanocarriers as Drug Delivery Systems for Antimicrobial Applications

In the fight against antimicrobial resistance, pharmaceutical and biomedical research is increasingly turning toward nanotechnology to enhance the performance of antimicrobial agents. Lipid-based nanocarriers, including liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers, and nanoemulsions, have emerged as versatile systems capable of improving solubility, stability, and cellular uptake of both conventional and novel antimicrobials. Despite progress in understanding microbial resistance and infection biology, treatment effectiveness remains hampered by poor drug targeting, biofilm protection of pathogens, and the limited development of new antibiotics. Studies have begun demonstrating the potential of lipid-based nanocarriers to overcome resistance barriers, achieve controlled release, and penetrate microbial biofilms, yet systemic understanding of their in vivo performance, safety, and translational applicability is still developing. More interdisciplinary work is needed to bridge the gap between nanocarrier design, antimicrobial pharmacodynamics, and clinical implementation. This Research Topic aims to advance our understanding of how lipid-based nanocarriers can revolutionize antimicrobial therapy by improving drug delivery, enhancing activity against resistant pathogens, and addressing infections associated with biofilms. It seeks to generate and gather original research and reviews focusing on the physicochemical, biological, and clinical aspects of lipid nanodelivery systems that can enhance antimicrobial performance. Key questions include how lipid carrier composition affects antimicrobial release and biodistribution, how nanocarriers interact with pathogens and host cells, and how these technologies can be translated into effective, scalable therapeutic interventions. To gather further insights into the development, application, and evaluation of lipid-based nanocarriers for infectious disease management, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Mechanistic studies on lipid-based nanocarrier interactions with microbial membranes- Nanocarrier-assisted delivery of antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, peptides, or alternative antimicrobials- Overcoming antimicrobial resistance via lipid nanotechnology- Lipid nanocarriers targeting biofilm-associated infections- Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of lipid-based antimicrobial delivery systems- Toxicological and immunological assessments of lipid-based nanocarriers- Translational approaches and emerging clinical applications Topic editors: Lígia Nunes de Morais Ribeiro, Belchiolina Beatriz Fonseca Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81155/lipid-based-nanocarriers-as-drug-delivery-systems-for-antimicrobial-applications
