Lipid metabolism and transport in neuronal and glial cell function and dysfunction
Metabolism and transport of lipids, such as fatty acids and cholesterol, are increasingly recognised as critical for brain function. The brain is composed of approximately 70% lipid and is the most energetically demanding organ in the body. Recent studies have revealed that intra- and intercellular lipid transport and metabolism are fundamental to normal neuronal activity, with diverse roles in both health and disease. Notably, research now shows that neurons can metabolize fatty acids for ATP production under specific conditions, challenging long-standing dogma on neuronal metabolism. These advances, along with the well-established role of lipid dysregulation in many neurodegenerative diseases, underscore the importance of understanding lipid metabolism and transport in neuronal function and dysfunction. This Research Topic aims to bring together novel research and insights from this rapidly developing area. We particularly welcome submissions with a molecular or cellular focus that investigate fundamental aspects of lipid metabolism and transport (either inter- or intracellular), as well as studies examining molecular determinants implicated in neurodegenerative diseases. We welcome contributions on, but not limited to, the following themes:• Fundamental aspects of lipid metabolism and storage in neurons, astrocytes, microglia, or oligodendrocytes, including roles in synaptic function and dysfunction• Lipid transport between neurons and glial cells in health and disease, including roles of neuronal disease risk factors (e.g., ApoE4)• Lipid droplet dynamics in neuronal or glial cells, including droplet-organelle interactions in normal and pathological function• Contributions of organelles (e.g., ER, peroxisomes, mitochondria) and their interplay to lipid metabolism in neuronal health and disease• Lipid metabolism and transport in neurodegenerative disease and/or neuroinflammation• Links between dietary lipids and neuronal or glial function• Novel methods and technical advances (imaging, lipidomics, biosensors, omics tools, etc.) for studying lipid metabolism, transport, and dynamics in neuronal and glial cellsBy integrating high-quality research and review articles, this collection aims to advance our understanding of the fundamental and disease-relevant roles of lipid metabolism and transport in the brain at the molecular and cellular level. Please choose the section Neuroscience Methods and Techniques to submit articles on novel methods and technical advances. We welcome different types of articles, including and not limited to: Original Research, Reviews, Mini Reviews, Brief Research Reports, Methods, Perspective articles.
