Lipid nanosystems for precision therapy of dermatological diseases
Nanobiotechnology has opened transformative avenues in the treatment of skin diseases by enabling precise manipulation of biological interfaces at the nanoscale. Among the diverse nanostructures explored to enhance transdermal and topical delivery, lipid-based nanoplatforms have gained considerable attention for their biocompatibility, structural versatility, and ability to mimic natural membranes. These nanosystems—including liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, and nanostructured lipid carriers—allow for controlled release, improved skin penetration, and localized therapeutic action. Despite these advantages, major challenges persist in optimizing nanoparticle composition for stability, predictable skin permeation, and safe long-term use in complex dermatological environments. Recent studies have demonstrated encouraging outcomes in psoriasis, eczema, infections, wound healing, and photoprotection, underscoring the potential of lipid nanoplatforms as a cornerstone in next-generation skin therapeutics. This Research Topic aims to consolidate cutting-edge advancements and address lingering challenges in the design and application of lipid-based nanoplatforms for cutaneous disorders. It seeks to bridge materials design with nanobiological mechanisms by emphasizing how nanoscale parameters—such as particle size, surface charge, and lipid composition—govern skin interaction, drug release, and biological outcomes. Submissions focusing on the nanoscale engineering, functionalization, and performance evaluation of lipid nanoparticles for dermatological use are particularly encouraged. By fostering a dialogue between nanotechnologists, biomaterials scientists, and dermatology researchers, this Topic aims to accelerate translation from nanoscale innovation to practical therapy and tissue regeneration. To gather further insights into lipid-based nanotechnological approaches for clinical and regenerative dermatology, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:-Design, synthesis, and nanostructural optimization of lipid-based delivery systems for skin disorders- Smart and stimuli-responsive lipid nanocarriers for controlled topical and transdermal therapy- Mechanistic studies on skin–nanoparticle interactions and penetration pathways- Nanoscale imaging and characterization techniques for evaluating lipid nanoplatform behavior in skin tissue- Nanotoxicology, safety profiles, and regulatory considerations of cutaneous lipid nanoparticles- Applications in regenerative dermatology, including wound healing and scar modulation Topic editors: Elisabetta Esposito, Mascia Benedusi, Debora Santonocito Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81637/lipid-nanosystems-for-precision-therapy-of-dermatological-diseases
