Liquid Biopsy in Diagnosis and Treatment of Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most frequent endocrine malignancy albeit it accounts for about 4% of all cancer types. Main histopathological types are Differentiated TC (DTC), Medullary TC (MTC) and Anaplastic TC (ATC). Nevertheless, different subtypes have been described to date according to the latest 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) classification of thyroid tumors. Meticulous histopathological examination provides important information regarding disease prognosis and thus it can lead the therapeutic plan accordingly.Tumor molecular profiling by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) using thyroid specific panels or targeted gene sequencing by Sanger technique may add valuable information regarding disease status, prognosis, and possible use of molecular treatments, in cases of structural disease progression. Identification of specific molecular alterations is of paramount significance towards personalized treatment implementation. In most cases archived Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded (FFPE) tissue is used for DNA and RNA extraction with the obvious restrictions of the archived versus fresh tissue and the inability to have up-to-date information regarding tumor molecular status.Liquid-biopsy, based on cell free DNA (cfDNA) analysis and/or Circulating Tumor Cells (CTCs) enrichment and enumeration is a non-invasive tool providing real-time information about tumor biology and molecular identity. Nevertheless, regardless of the data gathered from different studies, no consensus exists for the appropriate use of liquid biopsy in the diagnostic procedure and clinical follow-up of TC patients. In this Research Topic we aim to gather articles focusing on the latest basic, translational and clinical research regarding liquid biopsy in TC. We welcome the submission of Review, Focused Review, Mini-Review, Original Research, Protocol, Method, Perspective and Opinion Articles that cover the following topics within the scope of Frontiers in Endocrinology:1. Developments in NGS technologies analyzing cfDNA of TC patients2. Technologies for CTCs isolation, enumeration and molecular characterization in TC patients3. Clinical implication of liquid biopsy in TC diagnosis, prognosis and targeted treatment Topic editors: Paula Soares, Raffaele Ciampi Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/70771/liquid-biopsy-in-diagnosis-and-treatment-of-thyroid-cancer
