Low-Carbon Design and Life Cycle Safety Assessment of Offshore Engineering Structures
With the global push for carbon neutrality and the rapid development of offshore energy exploitation, offshore engineering structures (e.g., offshore platforms, wind turbine foundations) are facing increasingly prominent dual challenges of low-carbon transformation and safety guarantee. Operating in harsh marine environments characterized by salt spray corrosion, extreme wind and wave loads, these structures are prone to performance degradation during their life cycle, threatening operational safety. Concurrently, traditional design methods prioritize structural safety while neglecting carbon emission control, resulting in high life-cycle carbon footprints. This research area, themed "Low-Carbon Design and Life Cycle Safety Assessment of Offshore Engineering Structures", focuses on integrating low-carbon design with life cycle safety assessment, aiming to address the gap between carbon reduction goals and safety performance, which is crucial for promoting the sustainable and safe development of the offshore engineering industry. The core problem to address is the disconnect between low-carbon transformation and life cycle safety guarantee in offshore engineering structures, where traditional design fails to synergize carbon emission reduction with structural reliability under harsh marine conditions. To achieve this, the Research Topic aims to establish integrated frameworks that unify low-carbon design and life cycle safety assessment. Recent advances, such as digital twin-enabled real-time monitoring and AI-driven carbon footprint optimization, provide technical support for this integration. The goal is to summarize cutting-edge methodologies (e.g., green material application, multi-objective optimization algorithms), validate their effectiveness through engineering cases, and propose actionable guidelines, thereby bridging the research-practice gap and advancing the sustainable and safe development of offshore engineering. This Research Topic focuses on the integration of low-carbon design and life cycle safety assessment for offshore engineering structures. Specific themes include: carbon footprint accounting for offshore structures, low-carbon material application in harsh marine environments, integrated optimization of structural safety and carbon emission reduction, and smart monitoring-enabled life cycle safety management.
