Meaningful Self-Care for Educators

Self-care has become a topic of enormous interest in education. For example, a recent EBSCO search for self-care and educators or teachers returned over 20,000 peer-reviewed articles published in the last five years. During roughly this same period, dozens of books have been written on the same topic. The goal of this Research Topic is to better understand what drives this enormous interest and what the landscape of self-care looks like in K-12 schools. We know that educators report significant work-related stress. We also know that teachers leave the profession in significant numbers. With this Research Topic call for participation, we seek papers that investigate self-care among teachers, school leaders, and other key K-12 school personnel worldwide (e.g., school psychologists, counselors, administrative staff, school social workers). Paper topics might include empirical research on (but are not limited to):- What solutions exist to mitigate educators' work-related stress? - What practices can educators engage in to enhance their well-being? - What are some promising and innovative school and district efforts to create positive school cultures?- What relationships exist between broader societal factors (e.g., policies, organizational structures, family-schools relationships, etc.) and educators' well-being?- What is the role of leadership in teacher wellbeing? In line with the Frontiers Mental Health and Wellbeing in Education journal's ethos, we are open to a range of methodologies, including quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, and review methods. Innovative methods that tackle intersectional issues or meaningfully involve students and practitioners in the research process are encouraged. This includes empirical and practice-oriented papers that contribute to the discourse on Meaningful Self-Care for Educators. We welcome papers that focus on the individual but also look at the wider social and cultural systems that impact educator well-being and resilience.
