Measurements of Cardiorespiratory Coupling Applied to Cardiovascular Disease: Insights, Implications and Perspectives

Network Physiology is an multidisciplinary field dedicated to uncovering the complexity of physiological interactions across diverse physiological systems and hierarchical networks to understand integrative functions in health and disease. Manuscripts submitted to this Research Topic should be in the context of Network Physiology and explicitly consider, utilize, or inform perspectives and methodologies from Network Physiology. The non-invasive assessment of the cardiovascular autonomic system through measurements of heart rate and blood pressure variability (HRV and BPV, respectively), has emerged as an important marker for early diagnosis, risk stratification and outcome prediction in cardiovascular disease. However, autonomic control is affected by its complex interaction with several subsystems, such as the respiratory system. Since both parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves present respiratory-driven activity patterns, it is expected that respiration modulates heart rate and blood pressure dynamics. Therefore, cardiorespiratory coupling (CRC) has been proposed as a complementary measure to investigate the mechanisms underlying HRV and BPV pattern generation, through the study of the interaction between the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, using linear and nonlinear mathematical approaches ground on the analysis of time series variability. While the physiological and practical contribution of CRC is still under study, its investigation may be useful for a better understanding of cardiovascular control, its modification in pathology, and its relationship with health outcomes, especially in the context of cardiovascular risk factors. This Research Topic aims to broaden our knowledge of the different non-invasive approaches and models for estimating CRC, with particular emphasis on network-based measures that consider the oscillations of cardiovascular and/or respiratory time series, across health and pathology, in adult and pediatric populations, at rest and following physiological stressors. Our focus is on the relationship between CRC indexes and health outcomes in pathological conditions, particularly in relation to the role of CRC in early prediction of cardiovascular disease development based on risk factors in apparently healthy subjects. We welcome original research to investigate the feasibility, challenges and clinical applicability of CRC measures, their physiological relevance, as well as reviews of the state of the art and opinions for new insights. For this Research Topic we would like to address specific topics such as:• linear and nonlinear approaches to estimate the CRC• applicability of CRC for healthcare professionals• CRC indexes to predict health outcomes in health and pathological conditions• relationship of CRC with cardiovascular disease and risk factors• new insights into the physiological mechanisms and components involved in CRC patterns Topic editors: Beatrice Cairo, Raphael Martins de Abreu, Jakub S Gąsior, Sergi Garcia-Retortillo Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/76338/measurements-of-cardiorespiratory-coupling-applied-to-cardiovascular-disease-insights-implications-and-perspectives
