Mechanisms of Fast-Charging Batteries: Electrolytes, Interphases, and Degradation
Fast charging pushes electrolytes and their interphases with the electrodes far beyond the conditions of standard cycling. High current densities intensify ion transport bottlenecks, alter interphasial chemistry, and accelerate degradation and failure pathways that are much less pronounced under normal use. A mechanistic understanding of these processes will help design batteries that charge quickly without sacrificing safety or lifetime. This Research Topic centres on the electrolyte and its interphases with the electrodes under fast-charge conditions, and welcomes contributions from electrochemists, materials scientists, and computational researchers. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspective pieces, including the following subtopics, but are not limited to:- High-rate electrolyte design, including solvents, salts, additives, and localized high-concentration systems- SEI and CEI formation, structure, and chemical evolution under high current densities- Bulk and interphasial ion transport kinetics, focusing on desolvation, diffusion, and charge transfer- Fast-charge degradation mechanisms, including Li/Na plating, particle cracking, delamination, and thermal runaway- In situ and operando characterization of transient interphasial phenomena during rapid charging- Multiscale modeling and simulation of electrolyte transport and interphase reactions at extreme rates- Fast-charging mechanisms across Li-ion, Na-ion, Li-metal, and emerging rechargeable systemsFundamental electrolyte and interphase studies with clear relevance to fast-charge conditions are also welcome. The focus stays on the electrolyte-interphase relationship, so that the collection builds mechanistic insight applicable across battery chemistries and supports the development of batteries capable of safe, durable fast charging.
