Mechanistic insights and design rules in multi-field modulated photocatalysis
The field of field-coupled catalysis and photocatalysis is rapidly evolving, with interdisciplinary efforts converging on the development of advanced catalytic materials and the fine-tuning of interfacial environments. There is increasing recognition that combining external fields—such as piezoelectric, pyroelectric, triboelectric, and magnetic stimuli—with catalytic processes can significantly influence charge transfer, reaction kinetics, and the selectivity of chemical transformations. However, despite important advances in material synthesis and the realization of enhanced activity under such field couplings, the precise mechanistic understanding of these effects remains incomplete. Recent studies have successfully demonstrated that rational heterointerface design and reactive-phase engineering can enable new reaction pathways, bringing forth exciting opportunities but also highlighting the need for deeper fundamental insight.Current research shows that applying mechanical and electromagnetic fields can profoundly regulate the behavior of charge carriers and transient species at the catalyst surface, unlocking enhanced efficiencies and tailored product distributions. State-of-the-art characterization and theoretical investigations have shed light on how field effects modulate molecular adsorption, electron–hole dynamics, and interfacial reaction mechanisms. Yet, knowledge gaps persist regarding the quantitative relationships that connect catalyst structure, applied field, and interfacial phenomena, making it difficult to generalize design principles across different catalytic systems. Bridging these gaps is critical for the systematic development of next-generation catalysts that exploit multiple field effects collaboratively. This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding of how field-coupled strategies—encompassing piezo-/pyro-/tribo-phototronics, magnetic-field modulation, and reactive-phase engineering—impact catalytic performance at a fundamental level. By emphasizing mechanistic studies and the establishment of design rules that link catalyst structure, field-induced processes, and reaction selectivity or stability, this topic seeks to foster knowledge that guides more efficient and tunable catalytic systems. Contributions that integrate experimental observations with theoretical insights, and those that explore new directions in the synthesis and manipulation of catalytic interfaces, are particularly encouraged. To gather further insights in field-coupled catalysis and photocatalysis, we welcome articles focused on, but not limited to, the following themes:• Design and synthesis of catalytic materials responsive to multiple external fields• Advanced characterization of heterostructures under field coupling• Theoretical modeling of interfacial charge transfer and reaction mechanisms• Exploration of piezo-, pyro-, and tribo-phototronic effects on catalytic activity• Magnetic-field modulation of photocatalytic and reactive-phase processes• Structure–property relationships in field-enhanced catalysis• Mechanistic studies linking field effects to selectivity and stability of catalysts Topic editors: Baoying Dai, Yihuang Chen, Meidan Ye, Meng Zhang, Hengming Huang Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/77843/mechanistic-insights-and-design-rules-in-multi-field-modulated-photocatalysis
