Mental Health, Gender, and Migration: An Intersectional Approach

The aim of this Research Topic is to examine the intersection of gender identity and migration experience, and how these factors influence mental health outcomes. It offers a novel contribution by focusing on the lived experiences of individuals with migration biographies across different gender identities, considering various social and cultural contexts. Linking gender and migration highlights how social norms, labor markets, and state policies produce differentiated opportunities and constraints for migrants of various gender identities. We aim to compile research that captures both vulnerability leading to possible inequalities as well as protective factors like resilience and resistence, which examines individual experiences alongside structural and institutional dimensions, and highlights voices that are often overlooked in mental health research. We are interested in research that examines mental health outcomes, determinants of mental health, and experiences of mental healthcare through an intersectional lens, with particular attention to gender identity and migration biography across diverse social, economic, political, and cultural contexts. We welcome qualitative studies that bring individuals’ voices to the surface, as well as quantitative and mixed-methods research. We also invite systematic, scoping, and critical reviews that synthesize existing evidence, identify gaps in the literature, and advance theoretical or methodological approaches. Submissions using interdisciplinary, participatory, community-based, or co-created research designs are especially encouraged, as these approaches can help address power imbalances in knowledge production and ensure that research is grounded in lived experience. We welcome contributions from a variety of disciplines, including the social, behavioural, medical, and caring sciences, as well as public health and interdisciplinary approaches, addressing issues such as:· Assessment of mental health outcomes among individuals with a migration biography across diverse gender identities· The role of gender identity and migration biography in shaping exposure to psychosocial stressors, vulnerability, resilience, resistence and coping strategies· Individuals’ experiences of discrimination, social exclusion, racism, xenophobia, or gender-based violence, and their mental health consequences· Availability, access, and utilization of mental healthcare services (with a focus on migration and gender identity)· Experiences of mental health care, help-seeking behaviors, stigma, and trust in (mental) healthcare systems among individuals with a migration biography across diverse gender identities· The role of gender identity within the context of migration· The impact of social, economic, political, and cultural contexts on mental health inequalities (with a focus on migration and gender identity)· Gaps in educational and healthcare systems regarding mental health(care), migration, and gender identity· Critical perspectives on academic and research systems and knowledge production (with a focus on migration and gender identity)· Intersectional perspectives on mental health(care), including gender identity and/or migration biography· New methodological and theoretical approaches to conduct research and produce knowledge within the context of mental health(care), migration, and gender identity Topic editors: Johanna Buchcik, Saskia Hanft-Robert Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/77708/mental-health-gender-and-migration-an-intersectional-approach
