Metabolic and Environmental Orchestration of Germ Cell Competence: Molecular Insights and Translational Strategies

The field of reproductive biology is undergoing a transformative shift as researchers uncover how metabolic and environmental factors orchestrate germ cell development and competence. Traditionally, investigations in gametogenesis centered on morphology, hormone regulation, and meiotic progression. However, recent multi-omics approaches, real-time imaging, and molecular profiling have revealed that germ cell quality depends profoundly on mitochondrial bioenergetics, redox homeostasis, and epigenetic remodeling. These interconnected processes not only determine the ability of gametes to fertilize but also influence transgenerational inheritance and embryonic development. Current research, while illuminating, still grapples with bridging molecular data to functional reproductive outcomes, particularly in the context of environmental perturbations and metabolic resilience.Emerging studies have highlighted that metabolic pathways governing NAD⁺ levels, antioxidant responses, and non-coding RNA regulation serve as critical buffers against environmental insults that disrupt germ cell physiology. Modern environmental threats—such as micro- and nanoplastic exposure, heavy metal accumulation, and endocrine disruptors—have been demonstrated to compromise germline epigenetic integrity and mitochondrial performance, elevating risks of infertility and heritable defects. Although individual pathways have been characterized, the integrative molecular mechanisms connecting cellular metabolism and environmental toxicity during germ cell maturation remain insufficiently explored. A comprehensive understanding of these pathways could pave the way for targeted interventions to preserve germline health and reproductive success. This Research Topic aims to elucidate the metabolic and environmental determinants of germ cell competence by integrating molecular biology, toxicology, and systems-level analyses. It seeks to identify key metabolic regulators, signal transduction pathways, and epigenetic networks that sustain gamete developmental potential under physiological and stress conditions. By fostering a cross-disciplinary dialogue, this topic endeavors to promote translational research leading to diagnostic markers and therapeutic strategies that mitigate fertility challenges arising from environmental and metabolic stressors. To gather further insights into the molecular and cellular foundations of germ cell adaptation and dysfunction, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Mitochondrial bioenergetics and redox regulation in gametogenesiso Environmental toxicants and their molecular disruption of germ cell metabolismo Epigenetic and transcriptomic remodeling under metabolic and environmental stresso Roles of NAD⁺ metabolism, antioxidants, and non-coding RNAs in germ cell protectiono Multi-omics and imaging approaches for assessing germ cell qualityo Translational interventions for preserving fertility under environmental stress Topic editors: Fa Ren, Huaming Xi, Yifei Liu, SHUAI YU Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/82194/metabolic-and-environmental-orchestration-of-germ-cell-competence-molecular-insights-and-translational-strategies
