Metabolic Cognitive Health: From Bioactives to Translation

Obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension are linked to cognitive impairment, neuroinflammation, neuropathy and increased neurodegenerative risk. Shared mechanisms include impaired insulin signalling, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, vascular injury and altered gut–brain communication. This Research Topic will examine standardised phytochemical and nutraceutical interventions for neurological complications of metabolic disease. It will focus on the link between compound characterisation, preparation quality, bioavailability, mechanism, neurological outcomes, safety and clinical translation.Submissions should address both a defined metabolic or cardiovascular condition and a meaningful cognitive, neurological or neurovascular outcome.Topics of interest include but are not limited to: • Standardisation, authentication and chemical characterisation of phytochemical extracts and nutraceuticals• Bioavailability, metabolism, pharmacokinetics, stability and dose optimisationEncapsulation, targeted delivery and other formulation approaches• Cognitive impairment, neuroinflammation, neuropathy and neurovascular dysfunction associated with obesity, insulin resistance or diabetes, cardiovascular disease or hypertension• Metabolic–brain, gut–brain and adipose–brain mechanismsEffects on insulin signalling, mitochondrial function, oxidative stress and vascular health• Cognitive, neurological and metabolic biomarkersPreclinical studies, observational studies, clinical trials, safety assessment and translational researchThe Research Topic welcomes original research, clinical studies, systematic reviews, methodological papers and contemporary reviews. Studies should demonstrate a clear connection between the intervention, metabolic disease and neurological outcome.
