Metabolic Control of Immune Cell Fate and Tissue Remodelling in Chronic Lung Diseases

Chronic lung diseases, such as COPD, pulmonary fibrosis and BPD, impose heavy global health burdens with high morbidity and mortality. Recent studies have revealed that metabolic reprogramming is closely associated with their pathogenesis, as nutrient metabolism regulates immune cell fate (e.g., macrophage polarization) and tissue remodelling processes. Despite advances in immunometabolism, the precise metabolic mechanisms linking immune cell function to lung tissue remodelling remain unclear. This topic focuses on integrating metabolic regulation, immune cell dynamics and lung tissue remodelling, aiming to gather cutting-edge research to fill the knowledge gap and provide new insights for clinical intervention. This topic aims to address key scientific questions: How do metabolic pathways (e.g., glucose, lipid, glutamine metabolism) precisely regulate immune cell fate determination in chronic lung disease microenvironments? What is the molecular crosstalk between metabolic reprogramming, immune cell dysfunction and abnormal lung tissue remodelling? Its expected contributions include clarifying core metabolic regulatory mechanisms, identifying novel metabolic targets, and providing theoretical basis for developing metabolic intervention strategies. The innovation lies in emphasizing the bidirectional interaction between metabolism and immune-tissue crosstalk, integrating multi-omics technologies to reveal spatiotemporal-specific metabolic regulatory networks, and bridging basic research and clinical translation. The scope includes, but is not limited to: metabolic regulation of immune cell (macrophages, T cells, etc.) polarization and function in chronic lung diseases; roles of metabolic mediators (e.g., lactate, lipid metabolites) in lung tissue remodelling; metabolic signatures and biomarkers of pre-clinical and clinical chronic lung diseases; and targeted metabolic therapies. Authors should submit original research, reviews or short communications that are novel, scientifically rigorous and closely related to the topic. Manuscripts must comply with academic ethics, contain complete experimental design and valid data, and follow the journal’s formatting requirements for submission.
