Metal Alloys and Additive Manufacturing for Next-Generation Medical Devices

The use of metal additive manufacturing is creating new opportunities for the design and production of advanced medical devices. Through precise control of geometry, internal structure, and surface characteristics, 3D printing enables the development of components that are difficult or impossible to manufacture using conventional techniques. This Research Topic will focus on the development, processing, characterization, and application of metal alloys for 3D-printed medical devices. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between alloy composition, processing parameters, microstructure, mechanical performance, corrosion behavior, biocompatibility, and clinical requirements. We welcome contributions covering topics including, but not limited to:- Metal alloys developed or adapted for 3D-printed medical devices- Additive manufacturing techniques, including powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, and related processes- Alloy design, powder development, and process optimization- Microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, fatigue, wear, and corrosion resistance- Surface modification, coatings, and post-processing strategies- Biocompatibility and biological performance of printed metal components- Patient-specific devices, implants, surgical tools, and other medical applications- Design optimization, lattice structures, and topology optimization- Quality control, reproducibility, modelling, and process monitoring- Challenges related to validation, standardization, and translation into medical practiceBy bringing together researchers working in materials science, additive manufacturing, biomedical engineering, and medical device development, this Research Topic aims to highlight advances in metal alloys and 3D-printing technologies that can support the development of safer, more reliable, and better-performing medical devices.
