Methods and Best Practice in Occupational Toxicology

Occupational toxicology plays a central role in identifying, assessing, and managing chemical, physical, and biological hazards in the workplace. As industrial processes evolve and novel compounds emerge, traditional hazard assessment methodologies must adapt. There is an increasing demand for predictive, efficient, and robust toxicological methods that can keep pace with rapid technological progress while ensuring the highest standards of protection for workers. This Research Topic aims to consolidate recent advancements in methodological frameworks, practical guidelines, and analytical techniques within occupational toxicology. Historically, exposure limits and risk evaluations relied heavily on legacy animal models; today, the field is undergoing a paradigm shift toward New Approach Methodologies (NAMs). Integrating these modern tools, including high-throughput in vitro assays, in silico computational modeling, and advanced biomonitoring strategies, into daily occupational health practice is crucial for refined risk assessment and regulatory compliance. We welcome original research, comprehensive reviews, methodological protocols, and perspective articles addressing state-of-the-art practices in occupational exposure and risk assessment. Contributors are encouraged to submit manuscripts exploring, but not limited to, the following themes:- New Approach Methodologies (NAMs): Development, validation, and implementation of in vitro and in silico models in workplace safety assessments.- Advanced Biomonitoring: Modern analytical techniques for real-time or longitudinal assessment of worker exposure to industrial chemicals.- Inhalation and Particulate Toxicology: Specialized exposure methods tailored to occupational aerosol, nanomaterial, and dust exposures.- Risk Assessment and Thresholds: Best practices for establishing health-based occupational exposure limits (OELs), particularly for complex chemical mixtures.- Regulatory Translation: Case studies and frameworks illustrating the translation of modern toxicological data into actionable workplace safety policies and guidelines.
