Microbial Biopolymers: Exploring the Biological Potential of Exopolysaccharides

Microbial biotechnology has witnessed considerable advances in recent years, particularly in the study of microbial exopolysaccharides (EPSs) complex, extracellular polysaccharides secreted by a wide array of microorganisms. EPSs play crucial roles in microbial ecology, biofilm formation, stress protection, and interspecies communication. Despite substantial progress in isolating and characterizing EPS-producing microorganisms, especially lactic acid bacteria and soil or marine species, many questions remain regarding their biosynthetic pathways, environmental adaptability, and structural diversity. Recent research has shed light on genetic and enzymatic networks involved in EPS synthesis, revealing the intricate coordination required for polymer assembly. However, the full spectrum of EPS structures and their influence on microbial survival strategies, metabolic exchange, and ecosystem stability remain insufficiently understood. Addressing these knowledge gaps is essential for bridging microbial ecology with material science and biotechnology. This Research Topic aims to deepen understanding of microbial exopolysaccharides by elucidating their biosynthesis, structure–function relationships, and ecological significance. It seeks to uncover the molecular mechanisms underlying EPS-mediated protection, communication, and adaptation across different microbial niches. A further goal is to explore how evolutionary pressures shape EPS diversity, and to identify how these biomolecules contribute to microbial resilience. Ultimately, this collection aims to integrate perspectives from microbiology, genetics, biochemistry, and applied sciences to foster innovation in both fundamental and applied research involving EPSs.To gather further insights into the biochemical and ecological dimensions of microbial EPSs, we welcome contributions that examine their production, functions, and applications across diverse environments and systems.
