Microbiome-Cancer Interactions: Mechanisms, Biomarkers and Therapeutic Opportunities

The field of microbiome research has rapidly evolved, revealing the profound influence of the human microbiome on cancer biology. Recent discoveries demonstrate that microbial communities and their metabolites not only contribute to tumor initiation and progression but also play a critical role in modulating therapeutic outcomes. Ongoing studies highlight the intricate ways in which the microbiome shapes immune surveillance, redox homeostasis, metabolic functions, and the tumor microenvironment. Despite these advances, the complexities of host–microbe interactions, variability across individuals, and the diversity of microbial species still present major challenges. Increasing reports of dysbiosis linked to cancer risk, progression, resistance to therapies, and treatment-induced adverse events underscore the urgency of understanding these relationships at a mechanistic and translational level. This Research Topic aims to advance a comprehensive understanding of microbiome–cancer interactions by elucidating the underlying mechanisms and translating these insights into clinical applications. The primary objectives are to clarify how specific microbes and their metabolites affect tumor growth, regulate immune responses, and influence redox balance and cellular processes. Furthermore, the Research Topic seeks to highlight the potential of the microbiome as a source of novel biomarkers and targets for precision oncology, as well as to explore the efficacy and safety of therapeutic interventions that modulate microbial communities. By integrating knowledge from microbiology, cancer biology, immunology, and computational modeling, this Research Topic aspires to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and inspire innovative approaches for the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of cancer. To gather further insights in the rapidly developing intersection of microbiome and oncology, we welcome articles that investigate both mechanistic and translational facets of microbiome–cancer dynamics. The scope is limited to studies that explore the biological, clinical, and technological implications of microbiome research in cancer. We encourage contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Mechanistic insights into microbiome-mediated regulation of cancer progression- Role of microbial metabolites in tumor growth and survival- Microbiome-driven modulation of redox homeostasis, apoptosis, and cell cycle control- Influence of gut and tumor-associated microbiota on immune responses and tumor microenvironment- Microbiome-associated biomarkers for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response- Impact of microbiota on chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy efficacy- Microbiome-mediated mechanisms of therapy resistance and treatment-related toxicity- Therapeutic strategies targeting the microbiome, including probiotics, postbiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, and engineered microbes- Multi-omics, systems biology, and in silico approaches to microbiome–cancer research Topic editors: Ruma Sarkar, Dipranjan Laha, Arijita Sarkar Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78696/microbiome-cancer-interactions-mechanisms-biomarkers-and-therapeutic-opportunities
