Microbiome in Companion Animals, Livestock and Wildlife: Implications in Health and Disease in a One Health Context

The microbiome comprehends the microbial communities inhabiting an ecological niche, together with their collective genetic potential, functional activities and interactions with the host and surrounding environment. In animals, the microbiomes associated with specific anatomical sites, including the gastrointestinal tract, oral cavity, respiratory tract, skin, and reproductive system, are diverse, contributing to host physiology, metabolism, immune function and health, but may also include opportunistic, pathogenic and zoonotic microorganisms. Although the gut microbiome has received considerable attention because of its central role in host metabolism, there is a growing interest in microbial communities inhabiting other anatomical niches, due to their role in maintaining animal health and influencing disease susceptibility. Diet is also an important modulator of the animal microbiome, shaping microbial composition and activity and, consequently, host health. Advances in sequencing technologies and bioinformatics have changed our understanding of these complex microbial ecosystems in companion animals, livestock, and wildlife. Moreover, microbiome research may also provide valuable insights into microbial diversity, host–microbe interactions, pathogen ecology and antimicrobial resistance. This Research Topic aims to provide a multidisciplinary platform for studies investigating the diversity, composition, function, and dynamics of microbiomes associated with companion animals, livestock, and wildlife. We welcome studies exploring host–microbiome interactions, microbial ecology, health and disease, nutrition, environmental influences, zoonotic spill over potential and host adaptation across different animal species. We also encourage submissions employing innovative sequencing technologies and advanced computational tools to improve our understanding of microbial communities and shared microbial pathways in different animal species. By bringing together studies from veterinary medicine, microbiology, ecology and public health, this collection seeks to advance microbiome research within the One Health framework. We welcome original research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and scoping reviews addressing microbiome associated with companion animals, livestock and wildlife. Interdisciplinary studies integrating veterinary, environmental, and human health perspectives are particularly welcome within the One Health framework.Relevant topics include:• Gut Microbiome• Oral Microbiome• Respiratory Microbiome• Skin Microbiome• Reproductive Microbiome• Milk Microbiome• Wildlife Microbiome• Livestock Microbiome• Companion Animal Microbiome• Microbiome Development• Dysbiosis• Microbiome And Nutrition• Microbiome And Immunity• Microbiome Biomarkers• Microbiome Modulation• Resistome• Virome• Mycobiome• Comparative Microbiome Studies• Metabolomics• Multi-Omics Approaches Topic editors: Eva Cunha, Manuela Oliveira, Camilla Mariane Menezes Souza Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/84806/microbiome-in-companion-animals-livestock-and-wildlife-implications-in-health-and-disease-in-a-one-health-context
