Micronutrients as Immune Modulators in Infection, Vaccination, and Inflammation

Micronutrients shape immune resilience by acting as enzyme cofactors, transcriptional regulators, redox buffers, and determinants of metabolic fitness in immune and barrier tissues. Yet, key gaps remain in linking micronutrient status and availability to molecular immune mechanisms that govern host defense, vaccine responses, and inflammatory pathology. This Research Topic focuses on immunomodulatory roles of micronutrients across the spectrum of health, infection, vaccination, and chronic inflammation and aims to highlight mechanistic and translational research that clarifies how micronutrients are sensed, trafficked, stored, and utilized to tune immune function. We welcome submissions spanning molecular and cellular biology, immunometabolism, redox biology, host–pathogen interactions, and nutritional genomics, as well as rigorously designed clinical, population-based, and intervention studies that incorporate or generate mechanistic insight. A central aim is to connect biochemical pathways and molecular targets to immune phenotypes and ultimately to clinically meaningful outcomes such as infection severity, vaccine immunogenicity, and chronic inflammatory burden.Themes of interest include, but are not limited to:• Micronutrient regulation of innate and adaptive immune pathways,• Micronutrient–cytokine cross talk,• Consequences of subclinical deficiency or excess for infection severity and vaccine responsiveness,• Micronutrient interventions in infectious disease, autoimmunity, or immunosenescence,• Micronutrient bioavailability, trafficking, compartmentalization, and functional biomarkers of status,• Non-linear dose-response relationships (deficiency, adequacy, and excess) in immune regulation,• Determinants of vaccine immunogenicity and durability in relation to micronutrient status,• Host–microbiome–micronutrient interactions and mucosal/barrier immunity,• Precision immunonutrition: genetic and metabolic modifiers of micronutrient responses.
