Migration Mechanisms, Environmental Impacts, and Remediation Technologies of Emerging Contaminants in Soil-Groundwater

The study of emerging contaminants, including microplastics, metal nanoparticles, and organic pollutants, in soil-groundwater systems is gaining importance due to its implications in global environmental governance. These contaminants’ migration and environmental impacts within porous media pose significant challenges. Given the rising levels of plastic waste and the extensive use of nanomaterials, there is an increased focus on the environmental fate of these contaminants. Factors such as the physical heterogeneity and chemical complexity of porous media significantly influence contaminant behavior, including adsorption-desorption equilibria and transport pathways. However, our understanding of interfacial interactions between contaminants and media, multi-component co-transport patterns, and the environmental adaptability of remediation strategies remains incomplete. This Research Topic aims to unravel the migration kinetics and retention mechanisms of nanoplastics and microplastics within saturated and unsaturated porous media. By examining the regulatory effects of environmental factors on contaminant-media interfacial interactions and optimizing remediation techniques, the research strives to enhance ecological risk assessment methods. Through interdisciplinary approaches, including cross-scale studies, this topic seeks to provide theoretical backing for predicting contaminant risks and designing strategic remediation interventions tailored to varying environmental conditions. The scope of this research encompasses various dimensions related to the migration and remediation of emerging contaminants in soil-groundwater systems, focusing on their physical, chemical, and biological interactions. The following themes are central to this exploration:• Environmental transport and toxic effects of nanoplastics, microplastics, metal nanoparticles, and organic pollutants• Co-migration mechanisms of heavy metal nanoparticles and organic pollutants• Experimental characterization and numerical simulation of porous media microstructure• Efficiency and mechanisms of surfactants, biochar, and other materials in contaminant remediation• Field validation and environmental impact assessment of pollution site remediation technologies• Numerical simulation of emerging contaminants in soil-groundwaterThis Research Topic welcomes original research articles, review papers, and methodology articles that concentrate on the migration mechanisms, environmental impacts, or remediation technologies of emerging contaminants. Manuscripts should articulate clear scientific hypotheses and present innovative findings.
