Mindfulness in Psychotherapy: State of the Art, Current Advances, and Future Perspectives
Mindfulness-based approaches have become a significant focus within the field of psychotherapy, reflecting a cultural and scientific shift towards integrating contemplative practices with clinical interventions. Despite their widespread adoption in treating depression, anxiety, stress, and chronic pain, as well as their application in non-clinical settings, considerable heterogeneity persists in both research and practice. Key challenges involve clarifying the active mechanisms responsible for therapeutic change, delineating the factors that influence efficacy across different populations and contexts, and resolving ongoing debates about the optimal delivery and implementation of mindfulness interventions. Recent studies have begun to uncover the complex array of mediators and moderators that shape outcomes, while advancing theories have both expanded and complicated our understanding of mindfulness as an integrative and transdiagnostic process. Nonetheless, gaps remain in linking empirical findings to robust clinical guidance, and there is a pressing need to synthesize current evidence and establish unified methodological frameworks. This Research Topic aims to critically examine recent developments, current knowledge, and emerging questions regarding the utilization of mindfulness within psychotherapy. Central goals include elucidating the mechanisms through which mindfulness facilitates enduring psychological change, specifying for whom and under what circumstances mindfulness is most beneficial, and promoting methodological innovation in both research and practice. We seek to foster interdisciplinary dialogue by collecting conceptual, empirical, and clinically oriented work that advances our understanding of mindfulness as both a specific intervention and as part of a broader therapeutic paradigm. This endeavor not only addresses existing uncertainties but also sets future priorities for clinical application and scientific discovery. For this Research Topic, we focus on the integration, effectiveness, and methodological assessment of mindfulness within the context of psychotherapy. Submissions should be relevant to clinical practice, research, or theoretical development, excluding topics solely concerned with non-psychotherapeutic contexts or unrelated wellness applications. To gather further insights, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: ● Mechanisms of change in mindfulness-based and mindfulness-informed psychotherapy ● Mindfulness in contextual therapies and third-wave interventions ● Clinical trials, feasibility studies, and intervention effectiveness studies ● Moderators, mediators, and individual differences in treatment response ● Therapist competence, fidelity, and implementation issues ● Measurement, assessment, and methodological advances ● Applications across diagnoses, transdiagnostic processes, and clinical populations ● Theoretical, conceptual, and future-oriented perspectives on mindfulness in psychotherapyAppendix: We encourage a range of manuscript types, including Original Research, Clinical Trial, Systematic Review, Mini Review, Conceptual Analysis, Hypothesis and Theory, Perspective, Opinion, Registered Report, Data Report, and Technology and Code (when directly relevant to mindfulness research or digital interventions).
