Minimally Invasive Surgical Therapies (MIST) for BPH: Comparative Outcomes, Real-World Evidence, and Emerging Technologies

We are conducting a two-part exploration of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), reviewing both the historical and the forward-looking path of surgical care. This Research Topic focuses on future innovations, prospective evidence, and scalable implementation of next-generation minimally invasive therapies. For our companion collection on historical development, please see this Research Topic: “Surgical Evolution: Transforming Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Treatment Through History.”Minimally invasive surgical therapies (MIST) have rapidly transformed the treatment landscape of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Technologies such as Rezūm, Aquablation, UroLift, and iTind offer alternatives to traditional surgery, aiming to improve symptom control while reducing morbidity and preserving sexual function.Despite increasing clinical adoption, key questions remain regarding patient selection, long-term durability, comparative effectiveness, and real-world implementation of these technologies. Evidence from prospective trials, registry data, and real-world clinical practice is critical to define the role of these interventions within contemporary BPH management. This Research Topic aims to bring together clinical, translational, and health-system research evaluating modern minimally invasive therapies for BPH. We particularly welcome comparative outcome studies, real-world evidence, registry analyses, and systematic reviews that help clarify the effectiveness, safety, and durability of these technologies.Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):- Clinical outcomes and durability of minimally invasive BPH therapies (Rezūm, Aquablation, UroLift, iTind, PAE and emerging devices)- Comparative effectiveness studies between minimally invasive therapies and established surgical approaches (e.g., TURP, HoLEP)- Patient selection and predictors of response- Real-world data from prospective registries or large observational cohorts- Retreatment rates, sexual function outcomes, and quality-of-life measures- Learning curves and training considerations for new technologies- Cost-effectiveness and health-system impactSystematic reviews and meta-analyses of minimally invasive BPH therapiesOriginal research articles, prospective and retrospective clinical studies, registry analyses, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses are encouraged.Historical and surgical reviews, comparative retrospectives, and perspective pieces on paradigm shifts can be submitted to the Research Topic “Surgical Evolution: Transforming Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Treatment Through History.” Topic editors: Raffaele Balsamo, Davide Arcaniolo, Biagio Barone Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/80214/minimally-invasive-surgical-therapies-mist-for-bph-comparative-outcomes-real-world-evidence-and-emerging-technologies
