Mitigating safety risks in the transition to renewable energy: challenges and solutions
As the global energy landscape shifts from reliance on fossil fuels toward renewable energy sources, innovations like lithium-ion batteries, hydrogen energy systems, and supercapacitors are becoming increasingly central in both industrial and domestic applications. Despite their transformative benefits, these new energy technologies possess inherent safety challenges and susceptibility to misuse, thereby elevating the frequency of reports on safety incidents and resultant losses. Consequently, understanding and addressing new energy safety risks, along with developing appropriate countermeasures, has emerged as a critical area of concern within energy research. This Research Topic aims to investigate the safety risk and hazard characteristics associated with new energy materials and devices. The goal is to propose materials and devices that are more competitive in terms of safety and efficiency and to develop innovative methods and technologies to mitigate accidents related to new energy applications. Through this exploration, we aim to formulate strategies that safeguard against common hazards, ultimately contributing to a more secure deployment of renewable energy technologies. The scope of this research topic encapsulates a comprehensive range of themes, targeting the boundaries of both practical applications and scholarly inquiry. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Advanced new energy materials/devices;• Fault diagnosis of new energy systems;• (Thermal) management of new energy;• New energy hazard;• Fire extinguishment techniques.
